Description
Venture into the Grand Library, as the RuneSmith you must fight your way
through the endless aisles of corrupted books, collecting additional runes to purge the
ever-stronger enemies that await you. Combine runes to create dynamic abilities, and put a stop to
the evil Arch-Mage.
The genre of the game is best described as a deck builder roguelike. The
archmage is the main antagonist and summons characters from the books around. RuneSmith takes
inspiration from dominos. Other games were used as inspiration such as Slay the Spire, Scrabble, and
Words Can Kill. Words Can Kill is a similar concept barring the treasures giving individual letters
instead of whole words.
My Role - Systems Engineer
On this project I was tasked with designing the sequence of gameplay. This included moving from menus to gameplay and moving between levels after defeating or losing to an enemy. This came to be a challenging yet important role because the rest of the team relied on my code working in order to carry out their features. Playtesters on the other hand relied on me for the seemless experience when moving from one state to another. Since RuneSmith was worked on by 4 others, I would spread out into other tasks such as game balancing. In order to balance the game, I spent a lot of time listening to the feedback from our playtesters. I spent a lot of time adjusting specific enemy frequency and their damage stats in between playtests to find what was the right amount of challenge.
